Reincarnation: Maxwell "Max" Kawasaki
Canon and medium: Brave Police: J-Decker, anime
Age: Less than a year in canon (ROBOTS, Y'KNOW), 23 in game
Preincarnation Species: big ass sentient robot
Preincarnation Appearance: BOOM ROBOT
Any differences: Now he's less robot and more human. As in he's not a robot at all. Max is Japanese-America, leaning more towards asian in the looks department because I'm bad at PB surfing. He stands at roughly 5'7" and has a slender, athletic build. He has a habit of wearing sunglasses and douchy leather motorcycle jackets whenever he's not on duty (though honestly he still manages to look like a biker douche even in uniform). He has dark red/brown hair that could seriously use a trim but he doesn't give a fuck since he spends half his time wearing helmets anyway. He has a small tattoo of a stylized motorcycle on his front left shoulder that's been partly fucked up by a bullet scar, one of those douche bag barbed wire designs around his right bicep, and a huge half finished wing design on his back. He'll get it colored in some day. Probably.
Preincarnated History: Once upon a time in THE FUTURE (or at least in an unspecified year SOME TIME in the 21st century. (somewhere said 2020 so we'll go with that?)) technology got crazy awesome and people were all OH SHIT YES because advanced technology kicks ass and makes people's lives easier and shit. Sweet ass technology also meant that evil villain types were somehow going to be able to get a hold of all kinds of money and start building evil robots and machines and shit and start causin' all kinds of ruckus and breaking laws because that's just what villains DO. Also aliens for some reason. So how does Japan respond? By building GIANT ROBOT POLICE of course what else did you expect. Well actually the police Commissioner Saejima decided the police needed to build robots. Because it was cool (probably the actual reason).
These giant robot cops are known as the Brave Police. They're lead by a fourth grader in booty shorts named Tomonaga Yuuta, and he only got to be in charge because he 'power of friendship'd' the leaderbot Deckerd into being "pretty much human" sentient rather than just normal artificial intelligence robot sentient. THUS his AI evolved into "Super AI" and then all the robots after him were equipped with it. Here's a handy dandy link to a tiny wiki with little basic character summaries. Most of the series pulls that monster of the week shit and introduces new team mates and the good guys always win because FREINDSHIP AND TEAMWORK. You know how it goes.
Gunmax doesn't show up until like half way through, and when he does, he's a prick. He was either built in America and shipped to Japan, or some asshole programmer thought it would be funny to program him to speak random English sometimes for no reason. Most likely the former. Anyway. Prior to his introduction, Gunmax had been a highway patrol officer, partnered up with a human officer named Kirisaki. They were BFFS and life was awesome, and Gunmax looked up to and trusted his partner. At one point, Gunmax had pulled over some jackass motorcycle gang member on his own, and learned from him that Kirisaki had been selling police weapons and other equipment to said gang. Gunmax was surprised that his partner was pulling bullshit like that behind his and the highway patrol's back, but he still wanted to trust his partner to do the right thing. He didn't report Kirisaki's actions, hoping that he would turn himself in.
BUT HE DIDN'T. Instead, some other unnamed officer ratted Kirisaki out and he was fired (instead of y'know ARRESTED or something? Whatever anime.) Gunmax insisted that he hadn't been the one who tattled, but Kirisaki didn't believe him and instead swore revenge on Gunmax in true bad guy fashion, saying that he would make Gunmax 'feel his pain'. Bitter about Kirisaki's actions and betrayal and all that good shit, Gunmax turned into a great big asshole with great big trust issues.
Sick of Gunmax's asshole bullshit, the highway patrol shipped him off to the city, where Gunmax continued to be an asshole. He first shows up while Deckerd and Yuuta are chasing a shitty vehicle (called a doublebot, it had some evil giant microchip attached to the bumper) down on the highway. The pair of goody-two shoes boy scouts were trying to be all careful about it to avoid causing an accident or something, but Gunmax fuckin wheelied his ass in, took out the doublebot and sent it crashing through a barrier into a river. Naturally, not-asshole good guys like Yuuta and Deckerd were pissed off over Gunmax's reckless behavior and told him as much. Gunmax literally laughed it off and drove away, displaying a distinct lack of fuck's to give. He rolled up into giant robot HQ later to get more information, where Saejima announced that Gunmax was going to be an official member of the Brave Police. Since Gunmax pretty much stood there for five minutes insulting everyone, the general consensus was basically "fuck no that guy's a prick we don't want him". Gunmax didn't really seem to care because fuck the police.
Eventually Gunmax tracked some greasy hippie to a scrapyard. Turns out the greasy hippie was behind the whole doublebot thing. OR SO THEY THOUGHT. ANYWAY, Deckerd rolled up too, and the two of them ended up saving each other from junky car robots. Gunmax proved that he wasn't a complete prick, but he was still a pretty huge prick about insisting that saving Deckerd was just paying Deckerd back for saving him. They caught the hippie and took him back to HQ where they discovered that the REAL badguy had been the crazy futuristic automated garbage sorting facility ALL ALONG and that it had been building evil doublebot henchmen out of old cars and shit. Gasp.
Gunmax took off on his bike by himself to stop the thing from making more doublebots, and everyone else got pissed off. He was stopped from entering the facility by ninjabot aka Shadowmaru, and the rest of the team caught up. Being the biggest asshole in the universe, and still wanting to get into the place solo, he snatched Yuuta up and basically used him as a tiny human shield so that the other robots wouldn't try to blast him out of the air or something. Gunmax tried to ditch Yuuta since he didn't actually want to get the little bastard killed or anything, but being a goddamn FRIENDSHIP IS POWER spewing shounen hero boy type, Yuuta followed him. Gunmax was annoyed but Yuuta was determined to POWER OF FRIENDSHIP him into not being an asshole. At one point Gunmax's motor controls ended up damaged by BADGUYS (because Yuuta distracted him by being stupid and getting captured by doublebots) in the facility, so some sadistic fuck tossed him on a bigass conveyor belt that slowly rolled him towards a bigass smelter. Meanwhile the other Brave Police had infiltrated the facility too but fuck them. Just when Gunmax was about to bite it, Yuuta broke free of his captors and jumped on Gunmax (risking his tiny human life in the process of course), fixing his motor controls and saving his shiny metal ass.
Since Yuuta had successfully POWER OF FRIENDSHIP'd him over by putting his own life in danger to save him, Gunmax decided to give that whole not being an asshole to people thing a try.
Later on it was revealed that Gunmax could turn into a GIGANTIC FUCKING CANNON if he combined with his bike that would be usable by Deckerd in his J-Decker mode. That's fucking awesome, right? WRONG. Still possessing a sack of trust issues, Gunmax straight up refused to take the cannon form, insisting that he wouldn't trust just anyone to pull his trigger.
Yeah I know how that sounds.
Pictures from the highway patrol started popping up, depicting Gunmax riding with a biker gang. Whenever he was confronted about it, he'd just brush the questions off and take off on his bike. Because that was mature. Finally Deckerd had had enough of his bullshit, and handcuffed himself to Gunmax insisting that he'd follow him until he finally stopped being an asshole and decided to talk about whatever the fuck was going on. Gunmax was pissed and decided to ride off on his bike anyway, but this time he couldn't really shake Deckerd since he was all handcuffed to him. So they went on a road trip and stole gas from some old dude because Deckerd was dumb and forgot to gas up. Yeah these robots run on gasoline. Meanwhile it was decided by some police prick that if Gunmax was out blowing shit up or whatever and riding with biker gangs that CLEARLY he had to be dismantled because THAT'S NO GOOD. Yuuta was having none of this and did what he does best: cry like a bitch.
Cut back to homosexual innuendo bots. Gunmax had convinced himself that that other Brave Police wouldn't give a flying fuck if he was dismantled or something because he WAS kind of an asshole. Deckerd made Gunmax a bet; he was going to use his little communicator thingy to eavesdrop on the Decker Room (aka giant police robot HQ). If everyone was worried about the two of them being missing and shit, Gunmax had to stop being a bitch and tell Deckerd what his deal was. If not, then Gunmax was going to skip town like a boss. Needless to say Deckerd won so Gunmax told him all about his bullshit with Kirisaki when he was still with the Highway Patrol. It turned out Kirisaki was faking photos and adding Gunmax to them to make it look like he was running with this gang and shit. He must have some pretty amazing photoshop skills, just saying. Gunmax had been running off because he wanted to clear his name by himself, and he hadn't shared the information because he wanted to spare innocent little boy Yuuta the knowledge that an ex-cop was such a corrupt asshole. Aw what a bro.
And oh shit speak of the Devil, Kirisaki showed up OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE with an army of remote controlled motorcycles. He was pissed off that his little plan to get Gunmax booted from the police had ended in EPIC failure, so what does he do? If you guessed "combine his motorcycle army into a giant robot and attack a couple robots who just happen to be sitting in the woods handcuffed to each other for some perfectly explainable reason", then you're absolutely correct and you watch some weird shit.
And as to be expected, Deckerd had successfully POWER OF FRIENDSHIP'd Gunmax into trusting him. Gunmax turned into the cannon and let Deckerd pull his trigger (yes insert eyebrow waggle here), blowing up Kirisaki's dumb robot and winning like badasses. Kirisaki was arrested and they all lived happily ever after.
And then there were a bunch of goofy monster of the week battles where robots transformed and some British robot rolled in after Deckerd died for a little while thanks to some dickbag named Victim O'Rand and his evil robots called Chieftains, but he got better. Shit blew up and it was pretty cool.
The only other really GUNMAXcentric thing was this case involving stolen cars and the Brave Police's head mechanic Toudou Shunsuke. Some crazy bitch and her weird butler sidekick were stealing fancy cars and shit to sell to rich assholes. Meanwhile, Gunmax was a reckless asshole and wrecked his bike, and then decided that he needed a new one rather than just having the old one repaired. Toudou nagged him about being so careless with his machines and pulled this YOU CAN'T JUST REPLACE THINGS LIKE THAT talk about vehicles and whatever. Turns out Toudou was REALLY into classic cars, and since he just happened to own one, it was decided that he would be used as bait for the crazy car stealing bitch. The plan kind of worked until not only Toudou's car, but Toudou himself managed to get captured by the car thief since Gunmax kind of sucked shit at protecting him. With his bike still being repaired and Duke and Deckerd, the other Brave Police on the case, ALSO being repaired, Gunmax said fuck it and took off to save Toudou on foot by himself. WHICH HE DID. Kind of. Except that Toudou had decided not to escape by himself when Gunmax made an opening for him, instead staying to help him until Duke and Deckerd finally showed up with the repaired Gunbike to help out. And then they blew up the bad guys and arrested them the end.
And yes Gunmax had once again been subjected to the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. This seems to happen to him a lot. He and Toudou formed something of a father-son relationship. Well. As close to one as an old dude and a giant robot could get.
Also Victim came back, and was revealed to be an android that was built by some prissy douche named Nueva. This guy had some serious mommy issues, since his mommy was kind of sealed away for running insane tests on people while trying to perfect her sentient AI technology shit that she invented. It was fucked up and the Brave Police got their asses kicked by more Chieftains. Oh and Victim was turned into a giant robot too. Long story short the good guys won because of Yuuta's amazing ability to summon the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP in pretty much every situation. Including talking aliens out of fucking with Earth. It even magic'd the robots into having actual souls. That happened too.
Reincarnated History: Maxwell "Max" Kawasaki was born in the totally radical year of 1990 in the most American place in the world: America. Specifically, California. He didn't have any siblings and his dad was a hardcore workaholic who owned some computer part making business. Max's tattooed, biker mother did free lance art stuff and worked in sweet ass tattoo parlors. Since he tended to spend more time with his mother, Max picked up on her hobbies. He developed a fondness for motorcycles and he got his mother to design tattoos for him that they'd planned for her to ink after he turned 18.
Thanks to his father's business, the three of them moved between LA and Tokyo every couple of years. When Max was just entering high school, his mother passed away in a motorcycle accident. His father coped with the loss by working EVEN MORE. There were days on end where he wouldn't return home from work, and when he would he was usually drunk and went straight to bed. Max was usually left to take care of the house by himself.
Since his father was rarely around and moving between continents had made it difficult to keep in touch with childhood friends, Max grew accustomed to being by himself and generally disliked having to rely on anyone else. He didn't have any real friends and tended to keep acquaintances around only as long as he could find some sort of use for them. He became especially bitter toward his father as he got older. The old fart was rarely around and never supportive of basically anything Max ever did unless it was related work. His father fully intended for him to carry on the Kawasaki family business, but Max was having none of that fuckness. The day he graduated from high school, he told old man Kawasaki right where he could shove it. That's right. Up his ass. As to be expected, dad wasn't too happy about this information, and the two had a big time falling out. His father all but disowned him, moving back to Japan and leaving fresh-out-of-highschool Max to fend for himself.
If there had been one thing Max's father had been good for, it had been all those "SAVE ALL YOUR MONEY FOREVER" talks he'd given Max over the course of his life. Max took all the money he'd managed to save over the years, said FUCK IT, bought a used motorcycle and road that baby all the way from one end of the US to the other. He eventually ended up somewhere around Locke City, living in a motel for a few months and giving precisely zero fucks. He hadn't exactly planned far enough ahead to know what he was going to do after driving across the country. All he knew was that he wasn't interested in being some stuck up businessman, and he really, really liked riding motorcycles. One weird thing led to another and a couple months later he found himself at the police academy where he eventually became a highway patrol motorcycle cop that looked badass in sunglasses (his opinion).
Max was partnered up with an older dude named Harvey Davidson (I'm sorry). Max was a little weird about having a partner at first, considering he'd basically labeled himself as some kind of badass loner, but he warmed up to him. Having pretty much no family as far as he was concerned, he eventually developed a father/son type relationship with Davidson that almost bordered on hero worship. Here was someone who genuinely cared about him, and more often than not ended up going out of their way for him. They even got matching tattoos at one point. It was like one of those buddy cop shows, only the buddy cops shared names with motorcycle companies and were basically a walking pun tag team.
Everything was super great and awesome until ONE DAY. Max discovered that Davidson had been smuggling illegal weapons and equipment into Locke City and selling it to a local gang. Max trailed him to a warehouse in the Dead District and caught Davidson in the middle of a sale. He'd called for back up, but wanted to confront his partner on his own before said backup had a chance to interfere. The confrontation turned violent and ended in a shoot out, two gang members were killed and Max and Davidson were both wounded before backup arrived. Davidson managed to escape in the confusion, and is assumed to still be with the gang.
After the ordeal, Max closed himself off even more to the people around him.The one person in the entire world that he looked up to had not only betrayed him, but tried to kill him upon being found out. He went right back to being a douchebag loner, refusing to work with another partner and becoming increasingly more reckless. He turned to alcohol pretty heavily to deal with ~emotions~ and shit (a trait he unfortunately shared with his father, which pissed him off even more) which didn't really help him in the being an asshole department, but he still managed to never miss a day of work. Eventually he was transferred from the highway patrol to the inner city FOR TWO REASONS; ONE because he wanted a chance to track down Davidson himself and get some kind of closure, and TWO, because he was too much of a prick for highway patrol to handle. Now he's an LCPD motorcycle cop and he still gives negative fucks (and still looks cool in sunglasses).
First Echo: Discovering that Davidson had been selling to local gangs and then trying to get rid of Max triggered the memory of Gunmax's ex-partner Kirisaki doing the same thing (Basically I mean Davidson didn't have a giant robot made of motorcycles) with the line "I will get back at you. I will make you feel my pain". He doesn't remember being a robot or Kirisaki's name, just that he apparently has shit luck with partners betraying him and wanting some form of revenge on him.
Preincarnation Personality:
As mentioned about five thousand times already, Gunmax has some lingering trust issues thanks to his ex-partner Kirisaki's betrayal. In an attempt to protect himself from further EMOTIONAL TRAUMA or whatever, Gunmax turned into this cocky asshole with a sarcastic streak that runs deeper than a plumber's buttcrack. He's a master when it comes to giving bad first impressions, and can be rude or downright insulting even to people he's just met. He comes across as indifferent and selfish in that 'looking out for number one' sort of way, which is what caused so much friction between himself and the other Brave Police right off the bat. The fact that he was so blunt and opinionated didn't help matters either. He's a guy that knows what he wants, and will do whatever he feels like to get it, such the time he used Yuuta to make sure the other Brave Police wouldn't follow him into the garbage facility.
It is possible to gain his trust, it just isn't easy. To those who have managed it, Gunmax is still something of a sarcastic asshole, he's just not aggressive about it. He is capable of being perfectly friendly, said friendliness just involves a lot of teasing. After dealing with Kirisaki's bullshit and later being won over by Yuuta and the other Brave Police, he understands the importance of loyalty and the whole POWER OF FRIENDSHIP TEAMWORK thing. That doesn't mean he won't still run off on his own and try to do things in his own reckless, property damaging way from time to time. Even so, he cares deeply for those he considers his friends, and trusts them to watch his back. He's even gone out of his way to spare people's feelings, such as not telling Yuuta about his ex-partner because apparently the thought of a corrupt cop could have upset the kid or something, even though it created an even bigger mess for himself.
He also seems to like confusing the shit out of people by dropping random English phrases pretty much whenever he feels like it, but that's less "asshole" and more "weird quirk".
Any differences: Due to a lot of factor's in his life, like his father abandoning him and his ex-partner's actions, Max understandably has some serious trust issues with a nice heap of daddy issues added in for good measure. He flat out refused to take on a new partner after the incident with Davidson, preferring to patrol solo even after he was transferred to Locke City. Where Gunmax was able to warm up to people like Deckerd and Toudou and trust them, Max literally doesn't trust a single living person.
Since the incident, Max isn't too big on the whole self preservation thing. He's something of a functional alcoholic, and has a habit of jumping into dangerous situations. Gunmax was certainly reckless, but it was usually only as far as property damage was concerned and not nearly on the same self destructive levels as Max.
Despite being THE POLICE, Max has little to no respect for authority. The Highway Patrol was full of corruption, and Locke City apparently isn't any better. What with cops siding with evil aliens and all. Gunmax didn't always play strictly by the rules, but there weren't crazy conspiracies going on within the police force so he had no reason not to respect authority.
Less of a personality thing and more of a LITTLE NOTE, Max is fluent in English and Japanese, though he's pretty out of practice as far as his Japanese goes. If he can't think of a word while speaking Japanese, he'll just drop in it's English equivalent and not give a fuck. It sounds kind of stupid.
Abilities: Gunmax is a giant like 17ish foot tall robot that rides a giant motorcycle (Cleverly named "Gunbike"), and he kicks ass at it. He's also shown to have sweet shooting skills with a giant robot sized pistol and shot gun (Yeah, these robots don't even get lasers, it sucks). While all the other Brave Police have different vehicle modes and shit they can transform into, Gunmax says FUCK THAT because he is clearly too cool to become a tank or a dump truck or something. Instead, he's able to combine with Gunbike and wear it as armor. FLYING armor. He can also combine with the bike to form the giant ass "MAX CANNON", which... can't actually do anything by itself. It can only be equipped by Deckerd when he's in his bigass J-Decker mode because it kind of attaches directly to his body and there's no innuendo implied whatsoever. (J-Decker is just Deckerd combining with a bigass police...truck thing. Looks kinda gundamy).
Admittedly, Gunmax kind of sucks without the bike. He's slimmer than the other robots so maybe he isn't as durable and that's why he needs sweet armor. I dunno. He has been shown to be able hack his way through electronically locked doors with a little metal proddy thingy that extended from his wrist.
Roleplay Sample - Third Person:
Medical leave. Fucking super.
Max had been told to take it easy for a couple weeks, to give himself a chance to recover after he was injured in a confrontation with his former partner. Ever the rebellious asshole, he had all but completely disregarded the doctor's advice. Not two days after he was released from the hospital, he'd lost the sling for his injured arm and was already riding his personal motorcycle in what was most likely an immature display of 'you're not the boss of me, I do what I want'. Besides, he did his best thinking while he was riding. Well, that wasn't entirely true. He also did his best thinking while he was drinking. Unfortunately he'd already plowed through all the alcohol in his apartment. So, bike it was, and thanks to current events, he had a hell of a lot to think about.
The random numbers that had entered his mind during his little showdown with his ex-partner were weird, but they weren't as unsettling as the memory. At least, he had been pretty sure it was an actual memory, and not just something he'd seen in a movie somewhere.
"I will get back at you. I will make you feel my pain."
He repeated the words in his head as he sped down the street. Who the hell had that guy been? Who had Max pissed off so badly that they wanted to get back at him? To be fair, he managed to piss people off on a daily basis, but never that badly. He honestly wouldn't have thought as much of it, if not for the painful sense of betrayal that had accompanied it. It was bad enough that he had to cope with his ex-partner's betrayal, but Max couldn't shake the feeling that it hadn't been the first time someone had pulled something like that on him.
It pissed him right off.
More than anything, he was angry at himself for letting his guard down. For being so trusting. Believing in other people had only ever brought him down, and judging by the weird flash of memory, it was something that he apparently had a bad habit of opening himself up to.
Well, he wasn't going to make that mistake again.
Roleplay Sample - Network:
[AUDIO-smart phone or something]
Haha! Wow, this shit actually works!? So if this network thing is real, then this business about the police working with aliens must be true too, right.
[Well whoever the hell this is, they've got a bit of a drunken slur going on. Just a bit though, he's still speaking pretty clearly. He actually pauses here to take a drink, clearly unconcerned with first impressions.]
Unbelievable. And here I was thinking the guys with Highway Patrol were bad. I picked a hell of a time to transfer, huh? Well, whatever, down to business, I guess. My name is none of your business, and I don't wanna be your friend. I already get the basic gist of what's going on here, but I wanna confirm something. I skimmed over something about the Blood Keys bein' cyborgs or something? Someone tell me about that. Excruciating detail is most welcome.
